The rules around wearing masks have changed in Greater Sydney (including the Central Coast, Blue Mountains and Wollongong). From Friday 29 January it is recommended, but no longer compulsory, to wear a mask in shopping centres (including supermarkets).
It is still mandatory to wear a mask on public transport – including waiting areas such as a bus stop or train platform – and in some indoor settings such as places of public worship, gaming rooms and hair and beauty premises.
Face masks are also mandatory for all staff in hospitality venues who have a customer-facing role.

More visitors allowed at your place
Restrictions have changed for visitors at your home. You can now have up to 30 visitors, including children, over to your place on any day.
For outdoor gatherings in a public place the total is now 50, including children.
Number of people allowed at pubs and restaurants is unchanged
The rules remain the same – there must be four square metres per person at hospitality venues.
Smaller venues are allowed at least 25 people before the four square metres per person rule applies. It’s important that everyone continues to practise physical distancing.
How to wear a face mask correctly
Masks are effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19, especially when you’re indoors or can’t physically distance.
It’s important you always carry a clean face mask with you and wear it properly: * wash or sanitise your hands before putting on or taking off your mask
- make sure the mask covers your nose and mouth, fits snugly under your chin, over the bridge of your nose and against the sides of your face
- avoid touching the front of your mask while wearing it or taking it off
- don’t wear the mask hanging around your neck or under your nose
- put single-use masks in the bin after one use
